Matilde Bonaparte, niece of Napoleon I, was known for her breasts (“le plus beau décolleté”) and her talent as a painter. She also hosted a celebrated 19th-century Parisian salon attended by the greatest artists and writers of her time. This namesake perfume is an olfactory salon of provocative white florals (ylang-ylang, narcissus, jasmine) given tropical succulence with passion fruit and papaya. Mathilde’s heady brightness is softened by iris and sandalwood.

This “divine flower” is a luminous, untamed floral that captures the serenity of nature in motion. How does this work? In Ylang Ylang Nosy Be EdP, the ylang-ylang’s floral potential is encouraged with mint and jasmine. The EdP is a rich powdery white floral.

The extrait version of Ylang Ylang Nosy Be has more happening in the base. The perfumer added more dark musk and vanilla, and this way the perfume became darker, woodier, even boozier.

As always Perris uses the best natural extracts perfumers can obtain. Their ylang-ylang comes from the tiny Nosy Be island north of Madagascar.

The epitome of femininity as narrated by the queens of flowers: Rosa centifolia and Rosa Damascena, crowned by powdery Ylang Ylang and Florentine Iris, with touches of Jasmine and mountain Narcissus, Violet leaves, Blackcurrant and oriental woods.

Heaven on earth: Alamut.

If we were to believe Marco Polo’s story - Alamut was the fortress and headquarters of the order of assassins. In Alamut among other things, according to Marco, the new recruits could experience the demo version of heaven. An assassin to be would be inebriates by some potion (even though Marco never mention which drug it was, highly likely it was hashish). Then the recruit would be taken to a pleasure garden with drinks, food and beautiful maiden. Afterwards the head of the order would explain that absolute loyalty and fearless determination would guarantee an afterlife of this kind.

I was inspired while visiting Kew Gardens in London in May. Every May there are hundreds of blooming magnolia trees in different sorts, sizes, scents and colours. Usually it is a very rainy season and my inspiration was to create a scent of the water and rain on magnolia trees.  

The symbol of this modern perfume is an American modern dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis. She is not only a very talented performer, but also very feminine.
