Perfumes that suggest a marine scene — whether tempestuous oceans, seashore soirees, or even a beachside swimming pool at a luxury resort — are a cunning collaboration between the intent of the perfumer and the willing imagination of the smeller. There are plenty of natural materials that conjure the actual sea, from ambergris to seaweed extracts, with their salty, mineral, even leather/musky facets. But even more abundant are the aromachemicals which summon the sense of escape implied by sandy shores and limitless blue horizons. There’s Helional, a watery-fresh marine scent with a crisp melon facet that suggests an ozonic updraft. Calone evokes iodized air, as well as a slightly green and aniseed note with hints of watermelon. There are also ozonated materials such as Floralozone, and the marine moss of Evernyl, flickering between the smell of algae and wave-sloshed rocks. All of these notes play on a scale that summons everything from seaweed on wet pebbles, sea breezes in the air, cocktails by the pool, sun lotion on warm skin, and of course, the endless, boundless ocean itself.
