The nose

Cristiano Canali composed Bee, bringing a fascination with beeswax to its richly textured floral-gourmand structure. Affiliated with Argeville at the time of its creation, he built a royal-jelly accord around beeswax and floral extracts, seeking the warmth and complexity of a living hive rather than straightforward sugary sweetness.

Collaborators

Zoologist founder Victor Wong helped shape the creative brief with Cristiano Canali. After their initial discussion of a Toad fragrance, Wong steered the project toward beeswax and proposed a journey from the bee’s perspective: leaving the hive, gathering nectar and returning home.

Zoologist’s story

Founded in Toronto by Victor Wong, Zoologist translates animals and their environments into unconventional perfumes. Its compositions explore habitat, behavior and texture rather than literal animal smells, embracing both beauty and strangeness. The house uses synthetic substitutes for animal-derived musks, though Bee contains beeswax and is not vegan.

Bee’s concept

Bee grew from Canali’s interest in beeswax and Wong’s idea of tracing a bee’s journey between hive and flowers. Canali focused on the queen bee, imagining her warm, buzzing enclosure and flight into a floral world. Beeswax absolute and floral extracts create the honey impression, giving the composition a hive-like atmosphere rather than simply the smell of a sweet ingredient.

Bee was a finalist in the Independent category of the 2020 Art and Olfaction Awards. Despite its honey impression, the composition uses beeswax absolute and floral extracts rather than actual honey. Beeswax is a confirmed ingredient even though it is not separately named in the official note pyramid.
