火马 - Cavallo di fuoco - Zanini - Bloom Perfumery

The largest Chinese community in Italy is located in the Tuscan city of Prato. The main drag, Via Pisoiese, is an “everything everywhere all at once” bustle of Chinese signs, 24-hour restaurants, holiday-bright colours, white Porsches emblazoned with Hello Kitty. The street is accidentally hipster, underground on purpose, eccentric by nature — reflected in this fire horse of a perfume, Cavallo di Fuoco. In it, mint and celery lead unexpectedly to a hurly-burly blend of pomelo, ginger, Chinese jujube and honeyed Chinese oud. Just like the dynamic fire horse in Chinese astrology, this smellscape is bold, untamed and full of life.

Limited to 36 bottles, 38% extrait.

Blended with:

Pomelo tincture,
Osmanthus absolute,
Chinese Jujube absolute,
Persimmon fermented tincture,
Sichuan Pepper tincture,
Ginger essential oil,
Kaffir Lime tincture,
Rose Buds absolute,
Ginseng tincture,
Celery tincture,
Bamboo tincture,
Clove tincture,
Mandarin essential oil,
Wild mint tincture,
Chinese oud.

Important notice:

Zanini blends are living botanical compositions, crafted entirely from natural materials and free from synthetic fixatives or stabilizers. As with all things living, subtle variations are part of their nature: over time, you may notice a gentle evolution in colour, texture, or the appearance of natural sediment. These are not imperfections, but part of the character of the raw materials themselves.

These blends are olfactive smellscapes (but neither aromatherapy, nor ‘spray-and-go’ perfumes) and sensory experiences, closer to works of art created in the scented plane (rather than, say, visual or audio).

Certain essential oils and absolutes that are used in Zanini’s 100% natural blends may potentially cause allergies in some people. Please spray Zanini’s blends on fabric (on sleeves, scarves, etc.).

Zanini advise that those who are prone to allergic reactions, pregnant and nursing women, as well as people with chronic illnesses to be extra careful. Before trying natural blends, study the list of ingredients and consult with a doctor if you are not sure or a had a history of allergies. If you do decide to put these blends on your skin (unable to resist the temptation) always test the blend on the inside part of your elbow first and wait.

Do not spray these blends liberally as a cloud in the way you would spray a conventional perfume. Zanini’s smellscapes need to be… carefully applied and experienced. Be mindful that some oils can also make your skin hyper-sensitive to UV.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

A crowded street after dark, with sharp green aromas cutting through the warmth of food and spice. Cavallo di fuoco belongs to that alert, slightly unruly register: mint and celery keep its honeyed fruit and smoky leather from becoming plush or predictable.

How to wear

Its spicy, smoky depth suggests cooler weather, with restrained application allowing the green and citrus facets room to register. Follow the house’s guidance: apply sparingly to a sleeve or scarf rather than spraying a cloud, and test an inconspicuous area for staining. Natural ingredients can cause allergies; if applying to skin, patch-test first and be mindful of potential UV sensitivity.

Who it’s for

For those drawn to unconventional botanical perfumery, especially the contrast between savory green notes and honeyed fruit. It suits a taste for smoky leather, pungent spice and oud used for depth rather than as the dominant theme.

The nose

Filippo Zanini creates the house’s olfactory landscapes, drawing on a practice that began long before the brand was established. His approach centers on natural materials, patient extraction and the translation of places and memories into scent. Cavallo di fuoco brings that practice close to home, interpreting Prato’s Chinese community through an unusually botanical, spice-rich composition.

Zanini’s story

Zanini treats perfume as an autonomous artistic experience rather than an accessory. Its limited-edition “smellscapes” evoke real or imagined places through entirely natural materials, many gathered and processed by the house itself. Slow extraction, maturation and hand-finishing support a deliberately small-scale practice that favors individual expression over universal appeal.

火马 - Cavallo di fuoco’s concept

Cavallo di fuoco draws on Prato’s Via Pistoiese, weaving memories of Chinese restaurants, first encounters with wonton and Spring Festival celebrations into a portrait of cultural exchange. Its Fire Horse imagery gives that lived setting an exuberant character: restless, colorful and open to the city’s changing identity.

Extra info

Cavallo di fuoco means “Fire Horse” in Italian. The edition comprises 36 bottles at 38% extrait concentration. Its unusual preparations include pomelo co-extracted with charcoal-roasted mandarin peel, fresh-flower enfleurage for osmanthus and a five-year-aged jujube tincture.
