Copper - Comme Des Garcons - Bloom Perfumery

A high-contrast fragrance: metallic/vegetal, bitter/sweet. Copper opens as a galbanum bomb: the sap of the Persian perennial producing its characteristic grassy bite. Copper elicits strong impressions: from “peas growing in a sun-baked greenhouse” to “a cashmere scarf permeated with cigarette smoke”, with the unifier being “comforting”, due to its soft path to a faded tobacco-vanilla drydown.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

Copper suits a close conversation after time spent outdoors, when sharp green smells still cling to the senses but the pace has slowed. Its greenhouse-like opening brings a bracing edge; the soft, tobacco-vanilla impression underneath makes that edge feel intimate rather than austere.

How to wear

Try Copper in mild spring or autumn weather, when its bitter green opening and warm drydown can both register. Start with one or two sprays on skin and let the galbanum settle before adding more. In warmer conditions, apply lightly: the grassy bite and ginger are already assertive.

Who it’s for

For lovers of forceful green fragrances who also enjoy a soft, comforting drydown. Copper will appeal to tastes that favour bitter sap, metallic textures and unusual contrasts over polished citrus freshness or straightforward amber sweetness.

The nose

Aliénor Massenet created Copper at Symrise. Known for her work with Memo Paris, including Irish Leather, she often builds fragrances around distinctive textures and striking contrasts. Here, an assertive green opening gives way to a softer, warmer finish without losing its unconventional character.

Collaborators

Christian Astuguevieille shaped the creative brief around freshly cut grass, sunscreen, green chewing gum and a Comme des Garçons reinterpretation of Balmain’s Vent Vert. Working with Massenet, he guided the project from its green starting point towards the copper concept that connected fragrance and bottle.

Comme Des Garcons’s story

Comme des Garçons approaches perfume with the same experimental spirit as its fashion: unexpected materials, industrial references and deliberate friction between familiar sensations. Copper expresses that outlook through green bitterness, synthetic metallic effects and a comforting sweetness that resists conventional prettiness.

Copper’s concept

Copper began as a green fragrance rather than a literal study of metal. Its starting images included freshly mown grass beside sunscreen-covered skin, Hollywood Chewing Gum and the green character of Balmain’s Vent Vert. An association with Coppertone helped lead the project towards copper, replacing the originally planned green bottle with a metallic-colored one.

Extra info

The copper-colored pebble bottle was originally intended to be green, reflecting the fragrance’s initial brief. Copper also won a 2020 Fragrance Foundation France award in the experts’ parfumerie d’auteur category for a niche brand affiliated with a group.
