The following are some reasons why perfumes can become unavailable:

  1. Each year, the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) issues ever-stricter safety and allergen regulations. This affects quite a few classic formulas as well as niche compositions, and sometimes brands have to discontinue a perfume if they are unable to reformulate.
  2. The brand decides to change the concentration. For example, an eau de parfum is reformulated as an extrait, effectively turning it into a different perfume.
  3. The brand ceases operating. The creative director passed away, got bored, started a new project, sold the business, etc.
  4. The brand cannot keep up with logistics and production demands, with disruptions for up to a year. If there is no regular production and availability schedule, it is not viable for a stockist to carry the brand.
  5. The brand changed the distribution model, eg from niche to duty free.

Macaque Yuzu Edition - Zoologist - Bloom Perfumery

Against the backdrop of a mountainous terrain, two communities share a peaceful coexistence. Yet despite their proximity, the societies are distinctly unique. Macaques cavort among the trees, grasping with delight at nature’s bountiful pleasures. From the quiet solemnity of a nearby temple, their human neighbours regard them, coveting the monkeys’ playful abandon. The macaques are all but oblivious, sparing only the briefest of curious glances at the pensive faces below before surrendering once again to their carefree revels.

Sweet notes of yuzu dance through a pine forest, welcoming you to Zoologist Macaque. Incense adds gravity with aromas of Hinoki woods and myrrh. The delicate balance between heavy and light results in an austere woody scent with mild hints of creamy sandalwood. Macaque is exuberance tempered by calm, sublimity buoyed by joy, a happy harmony of meditative bliss.

This perfume is a new interpretation by perfumer Mackenzie Reilly. The original version, designed by Sarah McCartney, is discontinued and no longer available.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

A quiet pause after a woodland walk, with the conversation still animated but the pace beginning to slow. The yuzu brings a quick spark; hinoki and incense lend the restrained, inward-looking presence of someone content to listen rather than fill the silence.

How to wear

Mild spring or autumn weather suits the balance of bright citrus and resinous woods. Start with one or two sprays on skin, allowing the yuzu opening to settle before adding more. In warmer conditions, keep application light so the incense and sandalwood remain a measured backdrop.

Who it’s for

For those who enjoy dry woods and incense but want brightness rather than sweetness at the opening. Especially appealing to lovers of hinoki, tart citrus and restrained compositions that balance an austere structure with a playful accent.

The nose

Mackenzie Reilly composed Macaque Yuzu Edition as a new interpretation of the earlier Sarah McCartney fragrance. Her composition balances a lively citrus opening with an incense-and-pine framework, giving the woods a contemplative character without losing the fruit’s playful energy.

Collaborators

Zoologist founder Victor Wong helped shape the composition with Mackenzie Reilly. After responding to her incense-and-pine trial, he requested a fruity opening to express the macaques’ mischievous character. Reilly proposed yuzu and Fuji apple alternatives; Wong chose to release both.

Zoologist’s story

Zoologist translates animals and their habitats into imaginative fragrances rather than literal animal odours. Founded in Toronto by Victor Wong, the house embraces the beautiful, playful and provocative possibilities of that approach, using synthetic alternatives instead of natural animal-derived musks.

Macaque Yuzu Edition’s concept

Macaque Yuzu Edition reimagines the contrast between playful monkeys in a mountainous forest and contemplative people at a nearby temple. Reilly’s incense-and-pine trial became the foundation, with yuzu introducing the bright, mischievous counterpoint. It is a distinct interpretation, not the discontinued Sarah McCartney formula.

Extra info

Yuzu and Fuji Apple emerged from two alternative openings for the same incense-and-pine concept, and both became separate Macaque editions. The Yuzu Edition’s official formula is listed at 25% concentration; its note pyramid includes Hydro Carbon Resin and Olibanum Hyperabsolute.
