Mauna - Mendittorosa - Bloom Perfumery

Perfumer: Cristiano Canali

In Sanskrit Mauna means Silence.

The Silence Mendittorosa refer to is not the absence of noises, but the Strength, free of time and space, uncontaminated and a sacred vibration, behind everything, before everything. After all.

The perfume is a beautiful honeyed sandalwood with tonka and an incense mix of precuous resins.

All about this fragrance

Vibe check

Mauna suits the quieter stretch of an evening, when conversation slows and people draw closer. Its honeyed wood and resinous incense suggest warmth without exuberance; ginger gives that stillness a little tension. The presence is composed and tactile rather than brisk or sparkling.

How to wear

The sweet sandalwood and resinous profile lends itself to cool or mild weather. Start with one or two sprays on skin, allowing the ginger and incense opening to settle before adding more. For close indoor settings, keep application restrained; warmth can make the sweeter facets feel fuller.

Who it’s for

For those drawn to creamy sandalwood, honeyed sweetness and incense with a resinous rather than austere character. Mauna will appeal to lovers of textured woody fragrances who welcome tonka softness, spicy contrast and a subtle leathery undertone.

The nose

Cristiano Canali is a perfumer whose work combines distinctive textures with carefully balanced richness. Known for creations such as Zoologist Bee, he brings particular sensitivity to honeyed, resinous compositions. For Mauna, his personal connection to sandalwood was central: an encounter with the material in India helped awaken his interest in perfumery, and development began by exploring different Indian sandalwoods.

Collaborators

Stefania Squeglia conceived Mauna’s creative direction, choosing sandalwood as its centre and inviting Cristiano Canali to translate her vision of silence into fragrance. Artist Alessandro Reggioli created the sculptural lotus presentation, giving the concept a tangible form through ceramic craftsmanship.

Mendittorosa’s story

Mendittorosa treats perfume as independent, personal art, translating experiences and philosophical ideas into scent rather than following trends. Collaboration with perfumers, Italian artists and artisans gives each creation its own olfactory and visual identity, with craftsmanship extending from the formula to the sculptural presentation.

Mauna’s concept

Mauna takes its name from the Sanskrit word for silence, imagined here not as an absence of sound but as a sacred presence. Squeglia built the concept around sandalwood’s depth, with Sanskrit and the wood serving as a tribute to Ayurvedic tradition. A passage from Abhinavagupta’s Tantraloka, connecting sandalwood’s scent with inward bliss, provided a philosophical reference for the creation.

Extra info

Mauna belongs to Mendittorosa’s Talismans collection. Its presentation features a budding lotus in raku-style ceramic, a hand-painted leaf and a birchwood box. The names “Sacred Musk” and “Velvet” in its note list refer to molecular accords, not individual raw materials.
