A sea breeze weaves through the slumbering streets of Pompeii at dawn. Here, the Mediterranean aromas of citrus fruits and aromatic herbs blend with the wild scent of dew-kissed apples. The talcum-like fragrance of frescoed walls, suggested by powdery iris, grounds the fragrance.

Versi is an olfactory study in three chapters. Versi explores and enjoys the wonderful correspondences between Perfume and Poetry. The third and last of the three studies is Albatros Eau de Parfum inspired by the poem of the same name by Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867). The poem was published in the collection Les Fleurs du mal. It is indeed the second poem of the collection (first edition: 1857). It is found in the first of the books six sections, which has the title: Spleen et Idéal.

Late summer on a wild beach: blackberry bushes in the coastal dune grass, iodine on the lips, fingertips stained purple. The vertigo of standing on an ocean clifftop, the invigorating north wind. The fragrance unfolds: salted rock, caressed by tangy blackberry and swept by sea spray. Pebbles warmed by the sun, a sap of mineral roses. Deep breaths.

Beaufort’s latest fragrance, the confounding and aquatic leaning Fathom V, broadly takes it’s cues from Shakespeare. Throughout The Tempest, the writer conjures vivid images of violent weather, shipwrecks and magical islands but the name Fathom V itself stems from a phrase gleaned from ‘Ariel’s Song’ within the play:

“Full fathom five thy father lies; 
Of his bones are coral made; 
Those are pearls that were his eyes: 
Nothing of him that doth fade, 
But doth suffer a sea-change 
Into something rich and strange.”

The idea of this ’sea-change’ and the constant tidal flux of the sea is properly explored in Fathom V with the overdosed use of contrasting materials: salt and earth, fragrant herbs and mosses, pleasant floral notes and intense dark spices encompassing and outlining the push and pull of the oceanic torrents.

To commemorate a decade of Fathom V, Beaufort has produced a limited edition ‘Directors Cut’ extrait version of the scent: the ‘big green beast’ retooled in an ultra-strong variant at a 150% higher oil inclusion.

This ‘extended’ version brings to life the more muted aspects of the original, heightening the spices and turning the flower shop plant stems aspect into a fallen forest of green. A marine poem composed wave after wave…

Entre ciel et Mer (“Between sky and sea”) tells a story of Etesian winds, azure skies and flying over seascapes at top speed…

Icy, soaring and powerful, the first whiff feels as though it had been sculpted out of the Meltem – the north wind that blows over the Aegean Sea, with notes of crumpled, water-splashed leaves and the fruity-aromatic nuances of a lavender, pear and white thyme accord.

The scent’s convincing seawater effect is achieved through a molecular distillation of algae from the Pacific, with iodic and animalic notes of white lichen and ambergris.

The dry, almost mineral facets are balanced out with cedar, moss and sandalwood from New Caledonia.

A strikingly good interpretation of the marine theme.

Grigia is named for the grey amber — ambergris* — expelled from the sperm whale and used to impart a marine, almost-fecal physicality to perfume. This Grigia suggests a different kind of sperm — human ejaculate — with its bleachy niff and suggestion of release. Combined with an underlay of burnt hair and plastic, Grigia is a voodoo doll of a fragrance that puts a curse on your enemies while protecting you from harm.
