The Orange Extraordinaire collection.
An homage to the role of spices in Western perfumery, history and culture. Naturally it’s a majestic aromatic flow of cinnamon and ginger, with numerous sparks of pepper and a rich incense background.
All about this fragrance
Vibe check
This is a fragrance for an evening that gathers intensity without gathering speed. Cinnamon and ginger give the rose a heated edge, while incense adds a darker undertone: a substantial presence across a small table, suited to conversation that holds everyone's attention.
How to wear
Start with one or two sprays in cool weather, allowing the spice and incense room to unfold. Apply to the chest for a more contained effect, or leave one application exposed at the neck for a more noticeable presence. In warm conditions, use a lighter hand with its richly layered rose and amber character.
Who it’s for
For those who prefer rose with heat and shadow rather than dewy sweetness. Its appeal lies in the tension between aromatic spices, smoky incense and woody depth, with an amber warmth and leathery edge that suit lovers of substantial, textured perfumes.

The nose
Mathilde Bijaoui is known for compositions that give spices, resins and gourmand textures a carefully balanced warmth. Her work includes État Libre d’Orange’s Like This and Jo Malone London’s Myrrh & Tonka. In Spice Must Flow, she brings rose into dialogue with aromatic spices and a dark incense backdrop.
Collaborators
Founder Étienne de Swardt shaped the concept and creative brief, centering the fragrance on spice routes and cultural exchange. Mathilde Bijaoui translated that vision into the composition.
Etat Libre d'Orange’s story
État Libre d’Orange treats perfume as a medium for creative freedom rather than polite convention. Provocative names, irony and unconventional compositions define the house, while Spice Must Flow expresses its more humanist side: scent as a meeting point between cultures and ideas.
Spice Must Flow’s concept
Spice Must Flow belongs to the Orange Extraordinaire collection and pays homage to merchants who opened routes for spices and silk. Its rose-centered composition accompanies a narrative of cultural exchange and Renaissance humanism. Later brand storytelling explicitly connects the fragrance to Arrakis, the desert planet of Dune.
Extra info
The name’s Dune allusion is explicitly acknowledged in the house’s later editorial storytelling. Despite its spice-led title, the official composition gives Turkish rose absolute a central role. English and French note descriptions differ, but those differences do not establish a reformulation.
