The aroma swirls around the room, billows to the veranda, travels to the garden. Baked apples and cinnamon sticks merge into exhalations of puff pastry. Then come caramel, almonds and vanilla, powerful aromas that linger into the evening.

Contrary to Western expectations, sumo wrestlers rikishi 力士 exude an elegant scent which incorporates a traditional hair oil called bintsuke. This perfume conjures bintsuke with an aromatic eucalyptus and anise opening, before violet and heliotrope create a powdery smellscape, turning musky with the addition of patchouli and sandalwood. This eau de parfum represents a powerful sumo wrestler with a gentle, incense-like warmth.

A pile-up of contrasts: cinnamon along with tropical florals frangipani and ylang ylang, against the earthy bitterness of artichoke and leather. This almost-gingerbread, almost-cement perfume confuses the senses with its animal/vegetable/mineral mystery.

An extravagant fruity perfume in which warm boozy spices (cinnamon and cloves) incite carefree fruit into jammy debauchery in some dense sweet patchouli setting. Check out the crazy banana explosion in the opening.

From LO’s Parfum Intense collection, this is an amber with the darkness turned up to 11. There’s no white space here, just expensive raw materials piled high. Its vibrant opening with fruity notes is enriched by the bitterness of coffee, deepening into a powerful chorus of rose, iris, jasmine and lily of the valley. And this valley is a deep one, a soft black expanse of leather, nagarmotha and patchouli, cushioned by a dirtier-than-usual amber.

An intense incense that shapeshifts between cold/smoky and warm/creamy. This dream belongs to the mythological Irish warrior poet Ossian, who inspired the Romantic literary movement across 18th century Europe. Rêve d'Ossian conjures misty midnight forests with smouldering notes of pine, frankincense and myrrh, before calling forth the benevolence of Celtic fairies with mellow tonka bean and vanillic benzoin.
