Mimosa arrived in French Provence in the middle of the 19th century, making its way from Australia via Hyde Park and Crystal Palace. It was the Victorians (who spent their winters in the Riviera) who launched the fashion for this elegant tree. The demand for the beautifully fragrant mimosa bloom became so great that they were planted on a commercial scale in Tanneron, a commune just above Cannes.

Perfumers started introducing mimosa as a perfume note into formulas around the 1940’s. Now, the third decade into the 21st century, mimosa and its innocent green aroma is going through a mini renaissance.

Perris again collaborated with an amazing perfume artist to create their mimosa story. Jean Claude Ellena describes his Mimosa Tanneron as an ode to tenderness, sweetness, and the sensation of love about to begin.

Before we had modern synthetic musks, perfumers had to rely on a few animalic materials to give perfume formulas structure, longevity and artistic dimension. For example, the original 1920s formulation of Chanel No 5 had more than half its formula dedicated to deer musk, civet and castoreum hiding beneath jasmine and aldehydes.

It’s now possible to produce molecules identical to these animal secretions in a lab, recreating accurate accords of vintage base notes.

Nowadays, the task of providing the structure has mostly been given to clean macrocytic musks, and replicas of animalic materials are mostly used for their odor profile: warm, leathery, sensual and retro.

Musk Deer is an amazing modern reconstruction of the aroma of musk of the Siberian deer. It’s flowing, radiant and voluminous, alluring but elusive, just like the animals themselves.

Zoologist do not use animal products, and the deer musk note in this perfume is a clever accord.

Musk Extreme is a replica of the aromas and a dedication to animalic musks that were at the base of most perfumes before the era of synthetics. For instance, Chanel No 5's formula was around 1/3 of civet and 1/3 castoreum supporting its amazing floral ingredients. In Musk Extreme Perris pay tribute to vintage civet and deer musk, mixing powdery aldehydes, orris and molecules that are the same as those giving the unique sensual (or even naughty) aroma to animals' secretions (but are now synthesized in a lab rather than taken from animals).

It starts with an Imperial romance: The reign of emperor Hadrian in AD 117-38 was marked by military campaigns and building projects, including the famous wall across the north of England at the edge of the Roman Empire. Hadrian had married into the imperial family, but in his late forties he met a Greek youth named Antinoös (or Antinous) from Bithynia, now in modern Turkey, possibly during a tour of the province in AD 123. The young ephebe became the emperor’s lover.

Hadrian founded a city called Antinoopolis at the place where his lover died, and made him into a god- an honor usually reserved for member’s of the emperor’s family. Hadrian publicly commemorated Antinoös in huge numbers of statues, figures, portraits and coins across the known Roman world, an almost unparalleled memorial to a lost love.

Against pessimism, the virtue of melancholy lies in defining a memory against the “dark void”. A memory can be compared to a portrait defined in our mind like the fine lines of shapes and figures against an opaque background.
