The Sniff on Fortune by Brocard:

"Fortune is quite a light scent, which means that on the one hand it is very easy to wear, but on the other it probably wouldn’t suit a formal evening function. It’s very youthful and fun and made us think that it was the sort of thing best suited to taking the kids to the park or for a lunch date with friends."

Sunlight was commissioned by Brocard to Bertrand Duchaufour. It is their first experiment in the luxury segment and an approach to perfume making as conceptual art.

To understand this perfume you need to go back to those physics lessons at school when they explained the nature of light. That light is actually a wave of particles, a flow of energy and that we can only discern the separate colors of natural light with a prism.

The second thing to consider before you approach Sunlight is to think how we experience light and sunlight in particular. We register it around us, we can tell if there is more of it or less around but it’s a phenomenon on the verge of comprehension and conscious perception and in the past the Sun and its manifestations were worshiped as source of life and something divine bestowed on us.

In Sunlight the perfumer used exotic spices, juicy citruses, Mediterranean flowers, some gourmand accords such as marron glace and benzoin resin. However, they all merge into an omnipresent uniform wave of particles around you which you can only perceive as a whole perfume, same way we perceive sunlight. The perfume is also as pleasant as warm rays of the Sun thanks to the subtle gourmand touch, sweet citruses and gentle flowers.

The choice of materials is not random, the sun brings orchards to life, sweet aromas attracting busy bees, the golden round citruses resemble mini Suns and precious benzoin resin represents warmth earth might exude when heated with sun rays.

The bottle deserves a separate mention, it's heavy crystal with exactly 57 facets, the same number you have in the classic diamond cut, the perfect number to capture light inside the stone and make it pulse within.

You can actually spin the bottle (the base has been cut in a special way) to admire the play of light inside the amber coloured tincture.

Fleur de Louis by Arquiste £180.00

  • Key notes:
  • bergamot
  • cedarwood
  • galbanum
  • jasmine
  • neroli
  • orange blossom
  • orris (iris root)
  • Aromagroups:
  • floral

June 1660, the Isle of Pheasants, Basque region, French-Spanish border

Fleur de Louis is a refined and elegant imagining of the peace negotiations at the center of the marriage between Louis XIV of France and Marie-Teresa of Spain. A regal ceremony carried out with pomp and purpose against a newly built pavilion of cedar and pine which takes center stage.

Neroli, green galbanum, cypress and bergamot open, leading the way a heart of radiant orange blossom (a favourite of the Sun King), jasmine and subtly perfumed rose and clove water.

Powdery and clean orris contrasts with resinous white cedar. The charismatic beginning of a new era.

Shermine by Pierre Guillaume Black Collection £95.00

  • Key notes:
  • musk
  • orris (iris root)
  • vanilla
  • Tags:
  • #powdery
  • Aromagroups:
  • leather
  • woody

Conceptually Shermine is iris morphing into ermine, a cool woody material (which iris can be) turning into clouds of caressing powdery fantasy iris.

The perfumer hinted at the many faces of iris. Cardamom and lavender show how cool and aqueous iris can be. The Argentinian lemon note brings out the crispiness and sparkle and vanilla and musks highlight the creamy softness. Finally, clouds of classic powdery iris woodiness come out on the mix of vetiver, patchouli and guaïac wood.

***

The Sniff on Shermine:
"[it] is an mysterious fragrance which showcases woody notes alongside softer florals and musks. Both tantalising and bold, soft and woody, this fragrance is a changeable one that will match your every mood."

Iris Ardent by Molinard £110.00

  • orris (iris root)
  • violet leaf

There’s a tantalising friction in the smell of iris root. It’s austere, but tender. It can be powdery, but it also suggests leather. Depending on the context, it can read as feminine or masculine. Iris Ardent resolves this fabled material’s dissonance in a compelling eau de parfum that balances all of iris’ contradictions. The opening spikes of cypress and vetiver provide the scaffolding for cushiony amber and powdery iris. Juniper’s bright twang illuminates the darkness of incense and moss. Intellectual, but accessible.

  • violet leaf
  • vodka
  • Aromagroups:
  • leather
  • vintage/old school
  • woody

January 1837 St Petersburg, Russia

An olfactory journey, retelling firebrand poet Aleksandr Pushkin's fateful duel.

Aleksandr opens with stoic, almost sharp and frosted notes of vodka and birch leaves, mysterious and foreshadowing. We wait as Pushkin prepares toilette, neroli and violet create the effect of Pushkin's cologne.

Sweet violet leaf intertwines with leather and powdery orris (iris root), invoking an almost warm hay accord transporting us to the forest as Aleksandr rides to face his foe.

Aleksandr finishes on a melancholic base of towering fir balsam trees, leathery birch tar and animalic musk.

  • Key notes:
  • immortelle
  • labdanum
  • leather
  • musk
  • orange blossom
  • Aromagroups:
  • floral

June 1660, Isle of Pheasants, Basque Region on the Spanish-French border

A story of veiled beauty and innocence, Infanta en Flor (infanta in bloom) is an olfactory snapshot of the Infanta Marie Therese as she leaves the Spanish court for her new home as the bride of Louis XI. A union designed to bring peace to the two nations.

The opening notes of sweet immortelle (everlasting flowers) and cistus (rockrose) are uplifted by sharp green bergamot.

A delicate floral heart of orange flower, jasmine and Moroccan rose blushes and charms a coy Spanish leather.

Infanta en Flor finishes with a harmonious marriage of clean musk, amber and cistus.
