Inspired by the idea of a decadent encounter on the dancefloor of a nightclub in the glamorous jet-set Acapulco of the late 1970s, ELLA (and it’s masculine companion piece, ÉL) hark back to a time when hedonism was rife and to a climate where long, drawn out sun soaked days turn into adventurous nights.

Typically defined as a perfume with a citrus opening, a labdanum heart and a musky oak moss base, the chypre accord is, frankly, the stuff of legend and Arquiste’s ELLA aims to take that classic structure and ramp up the idea of a vivid sexual attraction by making it more animalistic. The civet, ambergris and the accord of cigarette smoke in the base provide that very human aspect in spades when the fragrances dries down, but what really characterises the scent are it’s floral aspects. With the use of Turkish rose, jasmin absolute, curupita, angelica root and carrot seed there’s a delicate balance that manages to smell light and sweet and yet seedy all at the same time.

Rich and gothic Moth starts with a heavy dose of dark spices to jolt your senses before settling into a dusting of honey-sweet rose and powdery florals. Slowly, it tests its wings, taking flight on an exotic journey of nagarmotha, guaiac wood and patchouli. Beneath it all lingers a smoky undertone that serves as a constant reminder to fluttering creatures of the danger in the tantalizing flame.

An essence whose floral and enveloping notes are rooted in myth, which plays with hypnotizing the senses like the young and beautiful Adonis against Aphrodite. Releasing the freshness of the flowers of wisteria, jasmine, geranium, damask rose, and white lily, this essence interprets and expresses the beautiful and damned Adonis, like a flower of short life that: “badly fixed to the ground and too fragile lightness owes its name to the wind and the wind just scatters its petals ”.

“I started Canvas by visualising ink (which is my medium as a tattoo artist), as black liquorice - liquefying it and adding colourful translucency with raspberry leaf, a wash of herbal notes and gauzy, painterly florals of rose and peony. 500 years is an homage to the role of rose in Western perfumery and culture. In a way this perfume is like a Rose line on the tube map starting from the rose water of Tudor times and then going through some classic rose recipes: a chypre, oriental rose, gourmand rose. 500 years is a complex story, however it is a clever progression through nuances rather than all of them exploding all at once.

Delivering complex layers of fruits, woods and florals with a leathery background. Bountiful roses and tea-like rosehip fuse creating a shimmering floral effect. While earthy patchouli is balanced with bright tones from orange and raspberry. Musk underlines the edible quality which is enriched by warming amber. Overall the effect is a spiced and leathered rose that makes for a seductive impact.
