Does Los Angeles have a scent? It’s impossible to say. So Etat Libre d’Orange collaborated with someone who knows all there is to know about perfumes as well as LA: a perfume critic-connoisseur-writer Chandler Burr and a perfumer Caroline Sabas.

You or Someone Like You is a fragrance that an LA woman might wear and it bears the title of Chandler’s recent novel, set in Los Angeles.

The perfume is freshness itself  created from molecules one finds in mint, shiso, violets and citruses but not from essenses corresponding to any particular plant.

Call it naturally synthetic or synthetically natural but perumer created something nature hasn't, and it's fun.

An interpretation of hōjicha ほうじ茶 (roasted green tea), a popular tea in Japan. The scent combines the roasted crispness of brewed tea leaves with the creaminess of steaming milk. Accents of gyokuro (high-grade green tea) and seaweed create a beguiling depth.

This is a beautifully rounded fig on the mellow end of the spectrum. Bright bergamot, cardamom and galbanum open the fragrance with confidence, leading into a smooth fig accord layered with iris, cypress and soft floral nuances. The earthy, woody base glows with subtle musk.

Kyoto is a lean and clean incense that smells like a sacred space in a forest clearing. The incense here is shaped by dry and spicy cypress and cedar, crisp teak, and the sweet hay of everlasting flower. Even just wearing Kyoto is a purification ritual.

Olive fruit absolute is an unusual material for an amber perfume, and a surprisingly appealing one. It gives a salty, animalic nuance to this sheer blend of cypress and sandalwood, rubbing up nicely against the cinnamon character of Tasmanian mountain pepper.

A perfume transporting you to a majestic eucalypts and mimosa forest full of sunshine. A fun fact: eucalypts can align their leaves in such a way so that there no shade, mimosas just fold their leaf tassels into neat noodles. This protects them from sunburns. Amidst that imaginary animated forest there is the sweet fuzzy musk theme to introduce koalas into the formula.

The perfume is soft, radiant and with interesting interplay between cooling notes of mint and eucalyptus and sweet musk, spicy incense and ambery sandalwood.

The scent of paper and the smell of words. A tribute to the lights of Paris and its love of books. Dry woods are enlivened by a shimmer of nutmeg and cumin, meeting in a crackling flame of amber and vanilla. Two varieties of cedar are showcased: Atlas with its resinous, leathery character, and Virginia with its dry and spicy “new pencil” notes.
