From LO’s Parfum Intense collection, this is an amber with the darkness turned up to 11. There’s no white space here, just expensive raw materials piled high. Its vibrant opening with fruity notes is enriched by the bitterness of coffee, deepening into a powerful chorus of rose, iris, jasmine and lily of the valley. And this valley is a deep one, a soft black expanse of leather, nagarmotha and patchouli, cushioned by a dirtier-than-usual amber.

It conjures up aromas of licorice rum, autumn sunset apples, and smoky bitter sweet tonka.

Your hand guiding me in a firm but gentle hold, we slipped into the wings of the Mariinsky theatre. While the dancers warmed up to the sound of Tchaikovsky, you lent towards me and tenderly kissed my cheek, enveloping me in a sweet, lingering aroma of incense.

The fragrance opens with the icy effect of grapefruit and natural bergamot enveloped in the aromatic notes of French sage. The heart reveals the spicy notes of natural cedar and Egyptian geranium. Then arrives the warmth of Moroccan orris, a modern leathery note and a complex ambery accord composed of sensual, woody, vanilla notes.

Aromatic sage, coriander and black pepper combine with mandarin and lemon for laid-back sophistication. Vetiver and musk give it muscle, while orris provides lean, refined woodiness.

The presence of a marble Hercules in the garden of the perfumer’s house, triumph of courage and immortality, elevates to myth the creations of Agatho and the Giardinodiercole becomes a perfume.

Blazing sunlight glistens then fractures on the roiling surface of an angry tropical sea. A caravel bobs among the waves, its tall sail blasted by hot, salty winds. Dangling beneath the ghostly vessel, a curtain of lethal tentacles sways menacingly in the swell. The Portuguese man o’ war drifts, letting its unwitting prey approach. Up to 100 feet long, their lacy tentacles exude crippling venom with the merest touch. In an instant, the prey is paralyzed, and as its organs slowly liquify, the colony of zooids begin to feed.

While it’s wise to avoid a Portuguese man o’ war in the wild, prepare for danger and excitement when you encounter this Zoologist perfume. Crisp ginger and metallic gunpowder deliver a fiery sting to open, before casting you adrift on a wave of briny seaweed absolute, immortelle and geranium. You’ll thrill to this enticing scent where the only pain is the delicious pang of longing.

A sweet childhood memory reenacted.

To ford the Lethe is to overcome the thunder and silence of solitude, reclaiming your name that burns like an eternal fire. Beyond Lethe starts this fire with the warm spice of nutmeg, softened by the herbal depth of mugwort and sage, creating a mysterious and contemplative beginning. Geranium and thyme unfold with a subtle aromatic clarity, before patchouli, incense and cedarwood deepen the composition, leaving a dark, meditative trail that feels ancient and enduring.

In Arabic, Lamar means “liquid gold”, the legendary potion long sought by alchemists in search of immortality. This generous fruity-floral embraces the eternity of living in the moment. In creating Lamar, perfumer Mark Buxton said, “My inspiration was to create a rich, natural, warm, long lasting fragrance, by using high quality natural products. This gives a feeling of walking through a bed of roses or a jasmine field – very feminine and sensual.” Lamar opens with a festival of berries, apple and pineapple. The heart notes glow with jasmine sambac, Turkish rose, Bulgarian rose and magnolia. Vanilla, musk and amber supply the softest landing.
